YOUR CHARACTER
NAME: Raven Darkholme
JOURNAL: [personal profile] studieswaitressing
FANDOM: X-Men: First Class (Film)
AGE: Never mentioned in canon, but 21 is the guess. She's supposed to be around 5 or 6 when she meets Charles in 1947 and the film takes place in 1962, so that's where the math leads.
APPEARANCE: Hi-res picture here! This is what Mystique looks like in her natural form. Because of the shapeshifting, of course, her apparent form will vary.
CANON POINT: From what point will your character be entering the game?
MEMORY LOSS: Nope!

WIKI/HISTORY: Mystique belongs to the X-Men: First Class continuum of the Marvel world, meaning that she comes from a world with various differences from the Earth-616 universe. Most notably, Charles is not crippled by Lucifer, but by Erik Lehnsherr. The First Class film deals with the initial formation of Xavier's X-men and Magneto's eventual creation of the Brotherhood of Mutants. It takes place during the Cuban Missle Crisis of 1962 and focuses on the recruitment of a team of young mutants and the relationship between Magneto and Professor X. A more detailed plot summary can be found here.

Raven's own personal history in the film is brief: she spends the first part of her childhood stealing from people by impersonating various characters and roles until she meets Charles Xavier. She attempts to fool him into simply going back to bed by pretending to be his mother, but Charles quickly informs her that she is not his mother. She is surprised that he doesn't react with fear when he finds out that she's a mutant, and she finds out soon after that he is a mutant himself: a telepath. Charles takes Raven under his wing and provides for her throughout her childhood. They become loyal friends, and Raven accompanies Charles during his schooling (although she chooses to work as a waitress rather than enroll in school herself; whether or not this is because she refuses to take Charles' money for tuition or simply has no interest in school is never made entirely clear) and to Washington when he is contacted by Moira MacTaggert. She finds herself in the midst of a situation that brings the world to the brink of war. Charles forms a group of mutants to deal with the threat to humanity, and Raven finds herself in contact with two important people: Erik Lehnsherr, a charismatic mutant whose ideals seem to line up more closely with her own than Charles' ever had, and Hank McCoy, another mutant whose abilities affected his appearance. As a member of the newly-formed team, Raven takes on the codename of Mystique.

Mystique comes rapidly to realize that her foster-brother wishes only to be a part of the world that the humans want to reject them from; she in turn realizes that she simply wants to be able to walk down the street without having to hide her real body and face from the world. While Erik Lehnsherr encourages her to be herself in order to be as successful as possible, Charles insists that she should still attempt to normalize herself -- and Hank McCoy creates a serum that would do just that. Encouraged by Erik's endearing words during an encounter in Erik's bedroom, she refuses the serum. The serum ends up backfiring and enhancing Hank's mutant abilities and appearance; he becomes a muscular, furry creature and is referred to as 'Beast'. While Mystique maintains that Hank is now more perfect than he was before, he recoils in disgust and she comes to understand that she cannot stay with Charles and the rest of the X-Men.

When the team confronts Erik's childhood tormentor (and the originator of the war-threats on the world) and Erik makes the decision to leave Charles and the other X-men, Mystique chooses to go with him and help form the Brotherhood of Mutants.
PERSONALITY: The thing about Mystique is that she spent most of her life being told that she should strive to be as 'normal' as possible, despite the fact that she was anything but. Her adoptive brother, Charles Xavier, had a mutation that was easy to hide (and a fun party trick, to boot); she was and is both jealous of his ability to blend in, and disappointed that he feels the need to hide at all. Having grown up (assumingly) without any real parental figure, most of her ideas about how she ought to act were based on survival instincts until she met Charles; she is still a predatory and animalistic creatures in some ways, willing to do whatever she has to in order to survive. She strives to be social, often being the first one of a group to try and promote bonding (when the teenagers first gather together, she is the one who suggests they ought to make code names) and trying to be supportive of her fellow mutants (as when she tells Hank that he is amazing, and not at all ugly or disfigured).

Meeting Erik Lehnsherr helped her realize that she didn't want to have to hide from the world; she should be proud of who she is. She's also extremely forward with people for whatever reason -- she isn't afraid to kiss Hank even though she's known him for a short period of time, and shows up in Erik's bed completely nude after deciding that she wants to get to know him better. I think part of this overtly sexual trait of hers is that, having worked as a waitress and seeing Charles interact primarily with bar-bimbos, she has gathered that it's the best way to get someone's attention quickly. She favors practical knowledge over book-smarts, since she had to survive using only her wits for the earlier part of her life; this might be the reason that she chooses not to go to University with Charles and instead becomes a waitress at a place near Charles' school instead. She feels emotions intensely and fully; when she is angry, she's a tiny ball of rage and pain. Since I'm bringing her from the end of the movie, she's more confident than at the beginning of the film, and more willing to do what she needs to in order for mutants to be accepted.

Mystique adapts well to whatever a situation throws at her, bother literally and figuratively. She's able to swing herself from having Charles as her only friend and companion to an expanded group of peers who she's comfortable jesting with in a short period of time, and she makes the snap-decision to join the Brotherhood of Mutants on the beach based on the fact that she knows her ideals line up with Erik's more closely than Charles'. Even if this is painful for her, she's willing to take the leap because she hopes it will lead to her happiness. She'll be friendly right up until you do something to upset her; then she'll become distant, recoil into herself in order to prevent being hurt again. Charles seems to be the one person that she can't quite give up on in this aspect, probably because they shared such a close bond as brother and sister for so long.
POWERS: Mystique's primary talent is shapeshifting. She can transform into any person that she's come into contact with; this includes vocal mimicry. While it takes practice, she can maintain a form if she places enough focus on it (for example, she maintains a serving job as a twenty-something blonde, so she must be able to maintain her form for eight or more hours at at time). She also possesses enhanced agility, and the ability to constantly alter and rejuvenate her body's cells -- as a result, she will be able to appear not to age, or to age very slowly.

RP SAMPLE: Mystique stares at the wall of the hotel that Erik has chosen for their group to stay in for the evening for a long time before she realizes that there are still others in the room; she's still in the main meeting area and not in one of the separate bedrooms. It's been awkward since leaving the beach; she stripped out of her uniform the moment they arrived and stuffed it into a bag that she intends to throw out. The impact of what happened on the beach is only starting to sink in for her, as she suspects it is for Angel; she turns to the other girl and manages a sort of sideways smile for her (it isn't returned).

Fine.

She stands up from her spot on the couch and loudly announces that she's going for a shower; Riptide and Azazel don't look up, and neither does Erik (he's too busy thinking, it seems). Maybe the water will relax her.

When she turns on the water, she makes sure it's hot enough to be a little distracting. Every moment she has to think right now, she's thinking about whether or not leaving Charles was the best decision. He'd been her brother for so long, and now -- she wasn't stupid, she knew it wouldn't be the same -- but now, she couldn't even really go home.

Maybe that was for the best: she'd never really had a permanent home, anyway. She'd thought, as a teenager, that Charles' estate might've been just that -- but she realizes now that it was just another stop. She's a wanderer, and although she still cares about her brother ... she's sure she'll be happier with Erik and the others. It's nice not to be treated like some sort of novelty or pet. She feels like perhaps Erik sees her as an equal, or even as a potential partner-in-crime. That's more than she can say for her brother.

She sighs, giving herself a quick rinse-down until the strange salty-sweetness of the ocean is off her skin, and then pops her head out of the bathroom door. No more dwelling on that; not just now.

"What's a girl got to do to get a robe around here? This place is fancy enough that we get complimentary ones, right?"

ANYTHING ELSE?: Nnnnope!
